AHJ Inspection Checklist for Solar + Battery Systems
Local rules win. If your AHJ tells you something that conflicts with this checklist, their requirement is the one that matters.
What “AHJ” Actually Means
AHJ stands for Authority Having Jurisdiction — the organization, office, or individual with the legal power to say “yes, you can build this” (permit approval) and “yes, this is installed correctly” (inspection sign-off). For solar and battery systems, your AHJ is usually one or more of:
- Building department — structure, roof loading, general building code
- Electrical inspector — wiring, overcurrent protection, labeling, NEC compliance
- Fire department / fire marshal — access, clearances, battery fire behavior, emergency response
Who Your AHJ Is
You don’t pick your AHJ — it’s defined by where the project is located. For most home or small commercial solar + battery projects, expect a city or county building department as the primary AHJ, with the local fire authority often reviewing battery locations separately.
Quick ways to identify your AHJ:
- Check existing permit documents on the property — the header usually names the department (e.g., “City of Springfield Building Department”)
- Search “[your city] building permits” or “[your county] electrical inspector”
- Ask your installer — any legitimate installer in your area knows which AHJ(s) they’re dealing with
- In rural or unincorporated areas, the AHJ is often the county rather than a city
How to Contact Your AHJ
You don’t need code section numbers — just clear, specific questions.
Step 1 — find the right department. Look for “Building & Safety,” “Community Development,” “Planning & Development Services,” or “Fire Prevention” on your city/county website, then find the phone number or email for “inspections” or “plan review.”
Step 2 — ask targeted questions. For a battery project:
- Do you allow homeowner-installed (DIY) systems if a licensed electrician signs off on the final connections?
- Do you have specific rules on where batteries can be installed (garage vs. exterior wall, minimum clearances)?
- Do you require separate fire department review for batteries?
Write down the answers or save the email — if an inspector on site says something different later, you can refer back to what you were told.

- As a one-pager to hand an installer or electrician: “please install it so this whole list is a ‘yes’ for our AHJ”

The Checklist
Rapid-Shutdown Compliance (NEC Article 706)
- ☐ Rapid-shutdown label visible and legible (red label stating “RAPID SHUTDOWN SWITCH”)
- ☐ Main disconnect switch accessible within 10 feet, clearly labeled
- ☐ Disconnect de-energizes the entire battery system when triggered
- ☐ Electrician confirms switch operation
Electrical Safety (NEC Articles 690, 750)
- ☐ Arc-fault protection installed on all DC circuits (AFCI breakers or module-level AFCI)
- ☐ Ground-fault protection on all DC circuits (GFDI or GFDI-protected combiner)
- ☐ Battery disconnects are rated for DC current (AC-rated disconnects fail in DC)
- ☐ All wire gauge is correct per system voltage and continuous current rating
- ☐ Grounding is continuous and tested (resistance < 25 ohms)
Fire & Life Safety
- ☐ Battery enclosure has 36-inch clearance on all sides (ventilation, inspection, fire access)
- ☐ No flammable materials within 6 feet
- ☐ Ventilation holes aren’t blocked
- ☐ Temperature sensor installed and operational (if battery is indoors)
Permits & Documentation
- ☐ Permit number posted on electrical panel
- ☐ One-line diagram matches actual installation
- ☐ Equipment cut-sheets filed with permit
- ☐ Installer certification on file
Common Reasons AHJ Inspections Fail
- Plans don’t match reality. The inspector compares the plan to the house and finds the battery or disconnects in different locations. Fix: update the plans before inspection, or install exactly where you said you would.
- Missing or wrong labels. Labeling is boring but easy to fail. Fix: use labels matching your AHJ’s expectations — many inverter/battery manufacturers provide label kits.
- Battery installed where the AHJ doesn’t allow it. A classic one: battery in an attached garage where the AHJ wants it outside or behind a rated wall. Fix: ask about acceptable locations before you drill holes or mount hardware.
- DIY work without required licensed sign-off. Some AHJs allow owner-pulled permits; others require a licensed electrician on the permit. Fix: ask explicitly whether DIY is allowed and under what conditions.
Notes for Installers and Designers
Attach this checklist as an appendix to your design packet, and highlight any items specific to your local AHJ (e.g., “our city requires X clearance in garages”). Consider adding a client sign-off page where the homeowner initials that they understand the shutdown procedure and basic maintenance.
